Definitions of 10Base2 etc..

When you see something like 10Base2 or 10Base5, the first number is the speed in Mbps and the other one, if made x100 you will get the distance, depending on the last number (or letter) you can even determine the type of the cable. There are only a few exceptions. See below for detailed information:

10BaseT

Cable Type: Unshielded Twisted Pair

Maximum length: 100m

Connector: RJ45

100BaseT

Cable Type: Unshielded Twisted Pair

Maximum length: 100m

Connector: RJ45

10BaseTX

Cable Type: Unshielded Twisted Pair

Maximum length: 220m

Connector: RJ45

10Base2

Cable Type: Thinnet (Coaxial)

Maximum length: 185m

Connector: BNC

10Base5

Cable Type: Thicknet (Coaxial)

Maximum length: 500m

Connector: BNC

10BaseF

In this post we will go through some general stuff regarding Networking. This is important, because it’s a common thing that in every household we have more than one computer, and most of the time we need them networked. In future posts we will go through different types of network setups.

Technical Words

Node: A terminal and/or workstation on a network
Host: A computer that is controlling the network
Topology:  The way the nodes are connected and set up together forming a network
Subnet: Communication system within a certain network

Each network topology has it’s own limitations and the things to consider before implementing it. Because not every topology can be used in any situation.

Things to consider

  • Maximum number of nodes
  • Connections required
  • Redundancy
  • Efficiency
  • Controlled degradation under a heavy load

Point-to-Point Transmission

Data is exchanged between 2 nodes / hosts only. Usually this is a two way communication.

Broadcasting

A channel that is shared between all the devices on a network. The data sent over the network will be read by all devices. The destination address is read by all the devices and if the destination address matches the one of the machine the data will be accepted, if not it will be ignored. Usually this is used in a one way communication.

You can easily enable this, but you will need to enable it after each SMS that you send, so, here is how to do it… and it will be enabled for all the SMS’s that you send.

  1. Install a Registry Editor (I really like this one)
  2. Go to \HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Settings\
  3. Add a DWORD there and name it SMSDeliveryNotify
  4. Set the value to 1
  5. Soft Reset your device

If you are a webmaster, or building your own website just for fun, you surely need to monitor which websites are linking to you, check your PageRank, and much more important information that you might want to know about your website.

Yahoo! Site Explorer - Check which websites are linking to you, and how many indexed pages you have.

Alexa -This estimates how much traffic you receive through it’s toolbar or widget, and ranks it accordingly.. and you will have a rough idea where your website is located when it comes to traffic, plus you can compare your own website with other websites.. (you can compare up to 5 websites) and see your statistics in a graph.

Popuri - This is a cool tool, you just write your website in it, and it gives you your PageRank, Alexa Rank, WHOIS, back links and much more information!

Quarkbase - This tool gives you some information about your website, such as the ranks, WHOIS, social popularity etc… it’s similar toy Popuri, but not exactly.

Statbrain - This tool gives you an estimate on how much a website receives visits, daily. I tried this on TheComputerMaster.Info and some other websites of mine, and I must say that it’s quite accurate.

These are only 5 tools for now, I will post more in the near future.

To Enable or Disable the Task Manager in Vista is very simple. Some versions of Vista have the option, and you can set this through a GUI, but that does not work for all versions, so I will be guiding you through the method that should work in all versions of Vista.

The Steps:

  1. Open the regedit by pressing the Windows Button + R and type in regedit.
  1. After that browse to “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System”
  2. If you don’t find the folder (which most probably you will not) right click on  Policies got to New -> Key then type in System and press Enter
  3. In the right pane right click and select New -> DWORD (32-Bit)
  4. Type in DisableTaskMgr and press Enter
  5. Now double click that DWORD
  6. Set it to 1 to Disable task manager or set it to 0 to Enable task manager

This is a very simple and funny prank! This will make the user go crazy, because he will click the icons but no applications will be launched. I’m sure that most users won’t realize what is happening.

So, just take a snapshot of the desktop, open paint (or Photoshop for better effect and image quality) and save that image somewhere. Then right click on the desktop, View, and uncheck ‘Show Desktop Icons’ and all the icons will disappear, if not, press F5 to refresh the desktop and they should disappear. Then change the Desktop Wallpaper to the image you just saved. The process to change the wallpaper depends from your Operating System.

Have Fun!
